In addition to carbon and nitrogen, phosphate is the most important nutrient and a limiting growth factor for algae, because algae cannot thrive without phosphate. Food residues, fish feces, leaves, pollen from the air etc. introduce phosphates into the ponds. If your pond plants can no longer absorb phosphates due to too high concentration, algae develop.
